Re-imagining Education – Post MD Education Annual Report
Post MD Education’s 2018-2019 Annual Report highlights activities of the past year that are preparing our learners in Postgraduate Medical Education (PGME) and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) to practice medicine in the second half of this century. Having a vision of what that might include requires not only imagination, but wisdom and a situational awareness of where we are headed in terms of care and our system of care.
E-Learning
E-Learning modules provide flexible learning options
Technology enhanced learning (TEL) is flexible, engaging and can involve busy clinicians across multiple sites. CPD has been involved in the development of synchronous, asynchronous and blended programs including the Relations with Industry module and the Opioid Clinical Primer Program while PGME has been developing the current iteration of PGCorEd, a series of self-directed multimedia web-based learning modules covering foundational topics based on the CanMEDS 2015 Physician Competency Framework.
Faculty Development
Building Faculty Capacity across Post MD
Post MD had been engaged in Faculty Development (FD) at the postgraduate and continuing professional development levels. At PGME, efforts to develop collaborative, innovative and simplified approaches to FD are being used to help implement competency based education (CBE) across residency programs. CPD has been working with FMEC-CPD to develop key recommendations for addressing the knowledge and skills needed for CPD providers and developers and continues to offer specialized training.
Wellness
Wellness across the continuum: Expanding our reach
PGME is taking active steps to develop a health and well-being community of practice. The Postgraduate Wellness Office was renamed to reflect its new mandate to serve both residents and clinical fellows at the University of Toronto. This will help to expand wellness throughout the continuum. PGME is also working closely with the MD Program to develop key approaches and principles to guide the support of and response to learners.
Partnerships
Increasing our national and international footprint
Partnerships over the past year have helped Post MD to increase its national and international footprint. CPD’s Safer Opioid Program is being offered across Canada in partnership with Saegis and PGME partnered with the MD Program and the School of Graduate Studies as part of a delegation that visited partners and potential partners in the Middle East.
Scholarship
Scholarship and Research across Post MD
Post MD Education had much to celebrate in research, scholarship, teaching, and innovation. Over the past year, CPD scholarship and research included 49 papers, 48 presentations and 13 grants. Scholarship and research for PGME included 21 workshops/presentations, 7 posters and 27 research awards.
Continuing Professional Development: Leadership
Celebrating Excellence in CPD
The Society for Academic Continuing Medical Education (SACME) promotes the highest value in patient care and health of the public through the scholarship of continuing medical and interprofessional education. At the annual conference, faculty and staff connected to CPD led presentations and workshops on scholarship in CPD, evaluating programs and streamlining processes. A number of faculty received award for excellence in research and scholarship.
Continuing Professional Development: Community
Strengthening our Understanding of Refugee and Indigenous Issues
The North American Refugee Health conference marked its 10th anniversary this year. Over the years, the conference has grown to become one of the largest global refugee health conferences attracting close to 700 participants. This conference runs every other year and alternates with the Indigenous Health Conference (IHC). IHC received support from Indigenous Services Canada and Crown-Indigenous Relations and Northern Affairs to build a Content Library earlier this year.
Continuing Professional Development: Innovation
Supporting faculty in CPD Program Development
The requests for educational consulting have doubled since 2014. Recognizing the impact that this service has had in streamlining the accreditation process and supporting the quality of programs, CPD now offers educational consulting for all new program directors and conference chairs. Additional resources for assessing learning needs and for Scientific Planning Committees have also been developed.
Post Graduate Medical Education: Leadership
Bolstering the Leadership Toolkit of Postgraduate Medical Trainees
PGME has launched a PG Leadership Certificate Program. The certificate is an immersive longitudinal program designed to equip select postgraduate trainees with the knowledge and skills needed to contribute to local and systems level improvements in the delivery of health care. In the current complex health care environment, these skills are required to optimize healthcare delivery for individual patients and society as a whole.
Post Graduate Medical Education: Community
Residency Programs: Standard and Selection Improvements
PGME program directors, program administrators and education leads have been working to familiarize themselves with the new General Standards of Accreditation for Residency Programs. These standards have helped programs to identify areas for change and improvement. In addition to this, recommendations from a recent report, Best Practices in Application and Selection, will also be implemented across all residency program selection committees.
Post Graduate Medical Education: Innovation
Elentra facilitates adoption of CBME
Elentra, a user-friendly and efficient IT system, has been implemented to facilitate the adoption of CBME across residency programs. The platform was originally created by a consortium of North American medical schools and designed to support Royal College residency programs in their transition to Competence by Design (CBD). PGME has worked to improve the platform to support its 23 residency programs.

Department of Family and Community Medicine
Jeremy Rezmovitz
In 2018-2019, the Department of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM) continues to develop and deliver a high volume of quality CPD events.
The Faculty Development program continues to develop strategies and activities to support DFCM faculty with career development as well as wellness and resiliency. We continue to encourage faculty to engage in our Basics series (Basics for New Faculty, Beyond Basics, Scholarship Basics and Leadership Basics) as well as our advanced professional development offerings. The DFCM Mentorship program offers opportunities for teacher mentees to find a Mentor to foster resilience and wellbeing at whatever stage they are in terms of personal and professional growth. Our DFCM Annual Conference, celebrating 50 years of Family Medicine offers numerous annual opportunities for dissemination of scholarly work as well as sessions on wellness and resiliency practices such as Balint Groups, Mindfulness and Yoga.
The Office of Education Scholarship (OES) continues to offer consultation services to departmental faculty members who are engaging in education scholarship. The team consists of scientists and clinician educators who work in partnership to support faculty members at any stage of their project, from idea to dissemination. Through our Education Program, we continue to host celebrations of education scholarship with a focus this year on generalism, dissemination and program evaluation. The ‘Art of the Possible’ grant program was established to support education scholarship in our department. Over the past year, our consultation service has been supporting projects now in the fourth cycle of grants.
In addition, we offered many peer support writing groups, journal clubs, grand rounds, and regional, national and international events. We also offered PriMed Canada, a primary care inter-professional CPD conference. Last year’s conference had over 3200 delegates and offered 25 hours of continuing education.
We are very proud of our global health and social accountability program. We offer programs for local learners and faculty with our refugee health primer and our global health, equity and primary care course. For our international learners and faculty, we hosted the Toronto International Program -TIP-China- in order to enhance leadership capacity in family medicine and primary care for Chinese general practitioners. We offered TIP FM, in order to enhance leadership capacity in family medicine and primary care by building on lessons learned in the Canadian and global context.
We’ve also strengthened our partnerships and collaborations both locally and globally. Locally, the DFCM Faculty Development Program partnered with the Department of Psychiatry, and Department of Nutrition (The Joanna and Brian Lawson Center for Child Health Nutrition); and in the Undergraduate Medical Education Program, partnered with the John Bradly Clinical Research Program (JBCRP). Globally, we continue to have a strong partnership with Addis Ababa University and continue to support the Toronto Addis Ababa Academic Collaboration in Family Medicine (TAAAC-FM) and became a WHO collaborating centre on Family Medicine and Primary care.
We are very excited about some recent innovations in the Quality Improvement (QI) Program with the redesign of the Post Graduate Medical Education QI curriculum, which will also serve as the platform for Faculty Development and CPD/QI education moving into 2020. This will align with the learning management platform ‘Learn Dash’ to host e-learning modules. From a scholarship standpoint, the faculty development program will expand the Mentorship, Leadership, and Wellness initiatives, working to integrate supports for Health Professional Educators across all programs.
We will continue to collaborate to create high quality CPD scholarship and are looking forward to creating new and exciting ways to work and learn together. For full background and further information, please visit: http://www.dfcm.utoronto.ca/.

New Activities/Continuing Activities
CPD office successfully runs communities of interest meetings. Pathologists from GTA meet to discuss their cases in a friendly atmosphere. The meetings are facilitated by the specialist from an academic centre. The attendees present cases with didactic summaries. The meetings allow community pathologists to safely evaluate their approach to diagnostic oncology and learn about new developments.
Department Innovations.
CPD office started an innovation. We created “highlights in the literature” where faculty publish review of most relevant literature in subspecialty pathology for general pathologists. This enables many pathologists to quickly scan the literature and read the most important papers. Both contributors and readers have an opportunity to enhance their knowledge and review new developments with their colleagues.
Partnerships and Collaborations
CPD office partners with different divisions on educational projects.
Future Directions
We would like to add more communities of interest and develop new events for our faculty.
CPD Awards Received
All contributors to CPD events including “highlights of the literature” will receive a thank you letter from the department.
CPD Posters and Presentations
Dr. Richardson made a valuable presentation at the community of interests about evaluation of margins in breast conserving surgery. Most people were unaware of the surgical approach. Wide implementation of this approach can help to improve sectioning of the breast specimens and therefore improve reporting.

In addition to the 56 programs led by Department of Medicine (DoM) faculty accredited through the Office of CPD, we provide a brief description of key highlights and achievements:
New Activities/Continuing Activities
City Wide Medical Grand Rounds: These rounds, started in 2005, continue to connect our hospital sites by both videoconference and webcast for nine rounds through each academic year. Host sites rotate ad hoc based on speaker preference and organizational needs.
Co-learning Curriculum in Quality Improvement (CoLearnQI): This innovative model for faculty development brings faculty and residents together in the QI learning process, and has significantly increased the capacity within the DoM to both carry out and teach QI. As of 2019, CoLearnQI has spread to 35 programs across several major departments at the University of Toronto, and trained over 100 full-time faculty members. We also piloted this educational model with dieticians and dietetic interns at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre.
Third Annual Summit for Women in Academic Medicine: Under the leadership of Dr. Sharon Straus, Vice-Chair, Mentorship, Equity & Diversity, the DoM organized the third annual Summit for Women in Academic Medicine (WAM), attended by over 150 faculty members across the University of Toronto. This highly impactful initiative provided an opportunity for participants to hear from leaders in medicine, develop leadership skills (e.g. how to say no and when to say yes; leadership skills; conflict management; how to be an ally), and network with other colleagues to increase equity within the DoM.
Third Annual Story Slam: Stories are the most powerful way of understanding ourselves, each other, and our world. They also help to create a sense of community and to remind its members of shared values and experiences. Hosted by Drs. Allan Detsky, Wilson Kwong, Kevin Venus and Jonah Himelfarb, the third annual Story Slam event celebrated storytelling and featured a collection of stories (five minutes maximum) told by individuals around the theme of “Filing Buckets” without notes or props.
Future Directions
The Department of Medicine is currently conducting an environmental scan of all its CPD activities organized through its 20 clinical divisions. The results will be summarized and presented to divisional and departmental leaders with the hopes of developing a set of guidelines and best practices to harmonize the department’s CPD offerings.

New Activities/Continuing Activities
This year the focus was on reaching a legal agreement between the The International Cognitive Approaches Network (ICAN) and the Department of Occupational Science and Occupational Therapy to release the online CO-OP course. This was successfully completed at the end of August. Primary organizers: Dr. Debra Cameron, OT Reg. (Ont.), Dr. Helene Polatajko, OT Reg. (Ont.), Dr. Sara McEwen, Jane Davis, OT Reg. (Ont.), and Debbie Hebert, OT Reg. (Ont.)
A new course was being developed focussed on the Arts and OT in this time frame. Primary Organizers: Elizabeth Cambridge,OT Reg. (Ont.) and Nazanin Nour, OT Reg. (Ont.)
Department Innovations
No new innovations to report. During the course of the year it was apparent that a review of the focus of CPD in our department needs to occur. This will be planned for the next year.
Partnerships and Collaborations
While the collaborative offering of the CO-OP course was achieved, we learned a great deal about partnership and considerations around striking partnerships with external Academies. This type of learning will be applied to future events. There were many issues that were not apparent that could be shared at a CPD meeting.
Future Directions
This year we will:
- review the vision and mission of CPD in our department.
- offer the Arts and OT course
- evaluate our online course CO-OP
- plan to offer new courses based on the skills of our department.
Department of Opthalmology

Continuing Medical Education at The University of Toronto is robust. All of our main educational events are accredited for Royal College Mainport CME credits. These events include:
- Weekly Grand Rounds (7:30-8:30 Friday am): accredited for 1 hour of CME activity and includes local, national and international visiting professors in all subspecialty areas of ophthalmology. Teaching is comprised of didactic lectures, case presentation and discussion and video presentations
- Annual Walter Wright Symposium. This is our department’s premier educational event, typically occurring the 1st weekend in December and attracts local as well as many out of country ophthalmologists. New this year, the topics for Walter Wright will be on a rotating on an annual schedule: Neuro-ophthalmology/Oculoplastics (2019), Cornea/Refractive Surgery (2020), Retina/Vitreous (2021) and Glaucoma (2022). Last year’s meeting: “Cataract Surgery, Optimizing Outcomes: Co-morbidities, Challenges and Controversies”, co-chaired by Drs. Ike Ahmed and Allan Slomovic. Was a resounding success with 5 Visiting Professors and 18 University of Toronto faculty lecturing. The symposium was accredited for 11.5 Section 1 CME credits with a total attendance of 445.

OVERALL CPD HIGHLIGHTS FOR THE YEAR
Our flagship departmental CE event, SickKids’ Paediatric Update May 1-4, 2019 is the largest paediatric CE event led by a department of paediatrics in Canada, with an attendance of 387 registrants over the four days. This year, forty-seven (47) faculty and SickKids staff participated in the delivery of the program along with 9 guest presenters. The Conference also featured a very successful Haematology/Oncology Day chaired by Dr. Angela Punnett, which provided an opportunity to explore emerging trends and issues that relate to haematological/oncological diseases affecting children including a state-of-the-art update to diagnosis, prevention and management of common and emerging problems.
This year, we have expanded our ‘Test-Enhanced Learning’ strategy to increase the number of RCPSC MOC-3 eligible workshops to 21 for PUC 2019 as compared with 20 for 2018, 15 in 2017 and 2016 and 10 in 2015. Testing, in this fashion, can not only provide data but also enhance learning and knowledge retention.
Also this year, we were awarded the Phil Manning Research Award ($41,000) from the Society of Academic Continuing Education to further explore how Test-Enhanced Learning (TEL) affects self-directed learning among paediatricians and to compare the effectiveness of ‘Test-Potentiated Learning’ to TEL. This RCT will take place at the 2020 SickKids Paediatric Update. Quarterly City-Wide Paediatric rounds and Quarterly Community Paediatrics Journal Club, offered by the Division of Paediatric Medicine, continue to be a very popular and well evaluated event attracting hundreds of faithful community-based paediatric attendees from around the GTA and beyond.
This year also marks the fifth iteration of the SickKids Teaching Scholars Program. The STSP is a ‘teach the teachers’ interprofessional ‘in-house’ course intended to develop junior faculty and fellows and interprofessional staff into scholarly teachers. The full complement of 26 learners have continued to provide glowing evaluations of the course and its teachers. For 2019/20 we have the largest number of paediatric fellows enrolled to date.
Other divisions have been very active in providing high quality Continuing Professional Development and some highlights include:
