PGY5 Anesthesia resident - Dr. Benjamin Steinberg

Doctor, scientist, investigator and award winner

Dr. Benjamin Steinberg is a case study in the learning continuum and managing the fine balance between practice and research. He completed his undergraduate degree in physiology and mathematics at McGill University before entering the University of Toronto MD/PhD program in 2003, with scholarships from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and the McLaughlin Centre for Molecular Medicine.

Dr. Steinberg completed the Clinician Investigator Program in 2016. His research for the Clinician Investigator Program was based on his post-doctoral work with Dr. Kevin Tracey (Feinstein Institute for Medical Research, New York) and Dr. Tak Mak (University Health Network, Toronto), on how the peripheral nervous system controls immune responses and how specific cells of the immune system modulate hemodynamic processes, such as blood pressure.

In 2015-16 he was the recipient of the CIHR/CSCI award for the University of Toronto. His submission for the award was a research project on Bacteria, Inflammation and the Neural Code. His role in the project included the formulation of the underlying hypothesis, design and completion of experiments, data analysis and interpretation, and writing the resulting manuscripts.

Dr. Steinberg is currently a PGY5 Anesthesia resident.
